BACK STORY

FREEDOMSCHOOL was created due to Australian state government mandates excluding teachers, Childcare, ESO s, Education Support and NDIS Workers from mainstream schools.

This not only affected thousands of educators but their students and their families. Thousands of unemployed nurses, police, firemen and women and allied health workers ( and countless other professions) have lost their jobs in the traditional workforce. But out of this a strong and committed parallel community has emerged to support itself. This includes FREEDOMSCHOOL

FREEDOMSCHOOL is aware of the origin of the early freedom schools in Mississippi in 1964. It identifies with the struggles and vision for non-discriminatory education and strong alliances that provide tutoring and mentoring services that meet individual family needs.

.... "and in December 1963, proposed an education program–Freedom Schools–for young Black Mississippians, who suffered in an educational environment that was “geared to squash intellectual curiosity and different thinking.” Such a program would empower young people “to articulate their own desires, demands, and questions” and “to find alternative and ultimately new directions for action."
